Q: Is there a way to crash something in Doom3 so i can lose/corrupt savegames or crash game
the way that reinstall needed?
A: Yes.
Changing the contents of .PK4 files and/or using some of console
commands/variables could lead to this, so backup first, only then do something unsafe.
You can freely backup (copy somewhere else) the saves and Doomconfig.cfg (located in Doom3 folder,
Base subfolder, savegames subfolder. .sav is actual save, .txt contains mapname,
.PNG is just a picture format (though needed for save), you may use ACDSee or Irfanview, which is FREE).
http://www.irfanview.com/
Doomconfig.cfg is a file which holds all of your settings for game, including the ones not restorable
by using "Options" in game (like how good you played the game, etc.). It won't change your
savefiles in any way, though.
So if you corrupted (and deleted) the Doomconfig.cfg file, Doom3 will create a new one with default settings.
And you still be able to load your save files and play game.

also about Mac and Xbox versions.
===========================================================================================================================
Q: is Doom3 intended to be playable on Linux(Unix)/Apple Macintosh and MS Windowses other than MS Windows 2000/Windows XP
and consoles?
A: Yes, partially. There is command line switch to install it into Windows 2003
(server version of Windows XP, so you can play Doom3 on it), "setup /a", check
to links, see first of guides there.
Don't know about MS Windows Longhorn.

Also there is completely unofficial patched version of setup file (.msi) that allows installing it to any OS you like
(maybe even Windows 3.11+32s ;-) but as i know any non-XP/2000 Windows (Win95/Win98(SE)/WinMe/WinNT 4.0) won't RUN it,
they just give you error about kernel32.dll.
And i don't know that for sure, check links.
Use some search-engine (check links) to search for that patch:
The patch name is doom3anyos.rar or the like, inside is .msi file.

Official first id Software (classical) Doom non-trial shareware version:
===========================================================================================================================
Q: Where can i find free completely official non-trial version of Classical Doom?
A: Here:
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/doom/doom19s.zip -- 2MB, shareware, for DOS, so very likely no sound in Windows.
If you want sound you'll use less classical MS Windows version, released in 95 and called Doom'95.
It's completely the same, except:
1) It's not the version the whole world played in 1993.
2) It's almost completely supports Windows and sound.
As far as i know, it's the first id Software game that supported multiplayer.
There are some frontends that allows even Internet play.
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/doom/win95/doom95.zip -- Doom'95 4MB, shareware too.
It's for all Microsoft Windows, 95/98(se)/Me/XP/2003, not only Windows 95. Maybe NT/2000/Longhorn, too, i don't know.
Also explore ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/doom/ (number of connections from the same IP is limited?) for Linux,
Mac versions, other files.
Shareware means it's incomplete and free, only first episode of three included (included, not unlocked.
So no patches will allow you to unlock remaining episodes).
In any other mean it's the same, you could play it, you could read the exit messages.
And it will run just like the full version, the only difference is number of levels.
If you liked the game, you could still buy the full version or Collectors' Edition version.
It's .ZIP archive, if you don't have Windows XP/Me, use Winzip or Winrar to extract .ZIP.
Inside DOS version "doom19s.zip" there are these files:
"
DEICE.EXE 17 303 02.02.95 1:23
DOOMS_19.1 1 439 232 02.02.95 1:24

Q: Why my mouse don't work with Doom'95?
A: Because there are problems with PS/2 and USB mices in Doom'95, as i know.
Maybe old DIN, COM (serial) mouses works. Also you could try Doom OpenGL/Direct3D versions.
!Don't connect two mouses to computer at the same time!.
Q: UAC logo, it's the same in Doom/Doom2 and Doom3 ?!
A: Yes, it looks the same.
UAC logo in classic Doom/Doom2
UAC logo in Doom3
Q: Why i have headache playing classic Doom?
A: It's one of symptoms of motion sickness (sea sickness),
maybe because motion is too jerky (it could even make you vomit).
Try some OpenGL/Direct3D ports of Doom (usually they don't include datafiles --.WAD.
So you'll need to take them from Doom/Doom2).

How to disable Doom 3 limit of 60 fps in single player
(in mp it must be changed on server):
===========================================================================================================================
Q: Why on my monster machine i get only 60 fps in Doom3?!
(by using "com_showfps 1". See console section)
A: From Fraps FAQ:
"
Why doesn't Fraps show above 30fps, 60fps, 75 fps (or any other framerate) in my game?
This can be due to several reasons.
Many games have internal limits that prevent them rendering faster than a certain framerate.
In some cases this can mean they are locked at a maximum framerate of only 30fps.
Another possibility is that you have Vsync enabled.
Vsync is used to synchronise the output of your graphics card with the display of your monitor.
When your graphics card has finished rendering the next frame it waits
for the monitor to finish displaying the current one before switching to the new one.
This means that the maximum framerate you can obtain will be equal
to the refresh rate of your monitor (which is usually 60hz, 75hz, 85hz, or 100hz).
If you disable Vsync then your graphics card will continuously render
without waiting for the last frame to be displayed in its entirety.
With fast graphics cards this means that your monitor may switch to a new frame halfway down the screen.
This effect is known as tearing as there appears to be
a visible line separating two different halves.
Due to this, you should generally leave Vsync enabled except when benchmarking.
Finally, Windows XP is said to have internal limits of 75fps for DirectX games, and 60fps for OpenGL games.
It is possible to download refresh rate fixes to work around this limitation.
"
from http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/Doom3/FPSConfigs.htm
"
com_fixedtic -- Controls the games tic rate. Defaults to 0, setting this to -1
will remove the 60 FPS cap for SinglePlayer.

Q: What about SDK for doing full modifications and total conversions for Doom3?
And what about patch for Doom 3?
A:
SDK is out, *final* patch is out, Doom 3 demo (3 SP levels)
is out, official GNU/Linux version is out.
http://www.iddevnet.com/doom3/ -- official id Software Doom3 SDK and help.
http://www.doom3.com/
-- click "Updates"/"Demo" there for dowwnload mirrors, usually all Doom3 files
(including GNU/Linux version) could be found on any site.
http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/doom/ -- official FAQ on GNU/Linux version of Doom3 demo/retail.
=========================================================================================
Q: How do i benchmark in Doom3?
A: There is a general rule to benchmark in id Software games:
you run "timedemo demoname" command in console a few times sequentially
and look what number of FPS it gives you.
The command itself is a command to play recorded demonstration of playing (you can record them too),
but at the highest speed allowed by your computer (not like "playdemo" command).
So it's basically almost the same as just playing the game and looking at fps (frames per second) counter.
Though, because you are not testing audio card, but rather CPU/videocard/mb/memory, you must turn off audio first
(so it wont slow down the whole system). Though, in Doom3 currently there is no sound in demos at all.
(maybe it changed, i'm not checking it constantly).
However:
1) gameplaying demonstration record contains different places, not one wall and one monster
(not only one or two components of hardware are tested, like when you just look at some wall
and "com_showfps 1" gives you some unbelievable number).
2) It's completely the same for different measuring (if some other settings are the same) and it's completely automated,
not needing you to press any keys
(it's not like "ok, go to that room and don't look at that thing in corner (i accidentally blasted it,
so my fps'es are without her), and don't touch anything, because i didn't touched anything,
now turn around and see what fps's you'll get, measure every 15 degrees)
Refer to console section for some harder understandable instructions on using console.
So, resuming: type "timedemo demo1" in Doom3 console (bring console by pressing Ctrl+Alt+tilde, or just tilde)
and press Enter key. Then wait for it to load and after the demo was played, you'll get something like this
picture.
Do this a few times (usually 2-3 times), the final score will be (fps1+fps2..fpsN)/N,
like if you got 15 fps first time, 20 fps the second time and 25 the third time: (15+20+25)/3=20.
So yes, the final fps score is not the maximum and not the minimum fps you get, it's the medium one.
If you got 24 fps the first time, 28 the second and 30 the third time, then it will be (24+28+30)/3=27.4
(Doom3 is rounding towards bigger numbers, so instead of 27.(3) it's 27.4).
For one of many benchmarking sites go to
http://www.doom3benchmarks.com/ -- *UNOfficial site*, 1024/medium was chosen maybe because it's available to everybody.
Also look at links section.
=========================================================================================
Q: Is the Doom 3 scary?
A: Well, yes and no.
On one side:
It don't contain anything that is visually realistic enough (or relates to one of phobias) to scare you
just because of this (not counting kind of of realistic moving guts and one of monster type -- unrealistic spiders).
And moving guts is just an animated wall texture, it's not an object, it can't hurt you in game (or move towards you).
So psychologically it's not like in one of Alien versus Predator (or was it Aliens?) 3D game, where facehuggers
actually hugged your face (in first-person view) and there was too few saves allowed (like 5 or so) for one level.
So actually you feared them just because they were the only monsters able to kill you instantly.
The same was with spiders and leeches in Blood 2 FPS game, though there was unrestricted number of save uses available.
In fact, the sound which spiders produce when they walk is somewhat close to the sound of facehuggers moving
in that "Aliens" game.
And there are a plenty of places where spiders appear unexpectedly. So if you have arachnophobia,
it could be scary.
On the other side:
Mainly, there are things which can scare you, only because you wasn't expecting them.
But the feeling fades after some time. So it's not like you will be scared for an hour after this.
In overall, it's not a horror survival game, it's FPS with some moments of scareness
only for creating appropriate atmosphere
(so it won't be like: "they look like plastic, so i'm not scared"). The main theme is zombies (for large part of game)
and spiders (throughout the game).
=========================================================================================
Q: Do i have to listen to all of these audio logs?
A: As i can remember to finish the game you don't have to listen to audio logs.
Q: Do i have to open all these cabinets?
A: No, it's already plenty of ammo and weapons in most cases (on normal skill level, must be easier on "easy" skill).
Q: Are there any secrets?
A: Yes. But there is nothing like "secrets number" or something, so you (and anybody else) won't know
if you didn't find all of them.
In fact, the game tries to be atmospheric, so there is nothing that will spoil it and remind you
that it's only a game (like someone saying the names of bonuses when you pick them up, like it was in Quake3)
or the bonuses itself (at least that i found), or the monsters behaviour, etc.
Though, not counting the 3rd person view camera in intros.
===========================================================================================================================
Custom resolution in Doom 3:
===========================================================================================================================
Q: How do i set some custom resolution, like Widescreen (W:H=16:9) one or the 2048x1536?.
A: First read the disclaimer then you may go to actual custom commands
Then, you could it 3 ways: by editing your Doomconfig.cfg file, by creating autoexec.cfg and adding the commands to it
(it must be in the same "Doom3\Base" folder as Doomconfig.cfg),
or just typing the commands in Doom3 console.
Editing Doomconfig.cfg requires opening it with any text editor (even Notepad, but better use WordPad),
editing text and saving the file as plain text (MS-DOS text document, ASCII text).
Creating autoexec.cfg is just a creating of new empty file with extension .cfg and adding text to it.
Typing in console is just typing commands in console.
In any way, there are two main commands (command variables) needed to do this:
"r_customWidth", "r_customHeight", which sets the height and width of screen in pixels,
the so called "display resolution".
Besides these commands (they are set in Doom3 by default to some numbers already) there is "r_mode" command,
that sets display resolution to some standard mode or just allows the custom one (i'll explain this one later).
Your computer monitor is wider in width than in height (not like PDAs and Nokia N-Gage), so first number (width)
is usually bigger than the second (height).
And they can't be any custom number, like 768x667, there are some rules and restrictions
even for display resolutions in Windows.
I don't know where to get list of possible resolutions for different cards and computer monitors.
And i'm not using widescreen resolution.
In case you just want to set some resolution which is lower than 640x480 (the lowest in Options->System),
you could just use r_mode.
(r_mode number parameter=setting resolution):
3=640x480 pixels (dots)
4=800x600 pixels (dots)
5=1024x768 pixels (dots)
6=1152x864 pixels (dots)
7=1280x1024 pixels (dots)
8=1600x1200 pixels (dots)
I don't know about "r_mode" modes that are higher than "8".
So, you just type "r_mode 3" (for example) in console (or editing/adding "r_mode 3" in Doomconfig.cfg/autoexec.cfg file)
and then doing "vid_restart" (only for console) (though using Options is easier for setting this resolutions),
waiting for game to restart video system (switching to desktop and again to Doom3) and reload game data, or just
exiting/starting Doom3 instead of using "vid_restart", and that's much faster.
That's all if you want to use some standard mode,
though settings lower than "3" or bigger than "8" are not completely standard for Doom3.
So, for custom resolutions:
For console: you type in console something like "r_customWidth 2048",
Enter key and "r_customHeight 1536", Enter key, then "r_mode -1", Enter key, then exit, the start Doom3 again.
(Everything must be typed without quotes).
In case your card/monitor don't support this resolution (or MS Windows don't allow it),
Doom3 either won't start at all, hang, your monitor will turn off
(if refresh rate is unavailable) or Doom3 will just return to some standard resolution.
For Doomconfig.cfg (located in Doom3\Base folder): open it with Notepad or WordPad,
scroll to lines containing "seta r_customWidth 720" and "seta r_customHeight 486" and change them to the numbers you want,
also change there the "seta r_mode" to "-1", save as plain text file (ASCII text, MS-DOS text file) with extension .cfg
(filename must be intact, Doomconfig.cfg).
Then start Doom3.
For autoexec.cfg: create it (empty text file) and add the strings "seta r_customWidth 1024", "seta r_customHeight 768"
(for example), and "seta r_mode -1", save it as plain text file (ASCII text, MS-DOS text file).
Then start Doom3.
Also there is "seta r_fullscreen "1"", which allows running Doom3 in fullscreen or window
(though i doubt that any standard GeForce and modern ATI-based cards support hardware 3D rendering in window).

What is an easter-egg?
===========================================================================================================================
Q: What actually is an easter-egg in computer programs/hardware/movies/everything else ?
A: Look here for definition of and for FAQ on easter-eggs.
I read about this hardware easter-egg on the same site and found that my dial-up modem over plain-old-telephone-line
USRobotics Sportster 56K have this.
There are some other sites on easter-eggs (of many others).
http://www.dvdangle.com/fun_stuff/easter_eggs/
http://movieweb.com/dvd/eggs/
Google easter-egg -- interesting joke.
Actually in Google.com, there are two easter-eggs at least: Pigeon Cluster (PC) search engine technique and UI languages.
I don't remember exactly, but looks like i found Google languages easter-egg by myself, i didn't read about it.
And it's really simple to find it at languages selection page
-- there are languages which contain xxxx in link to them: "Bork, bork, bork!","Elmer Fudd","Hacker","Klingon","Pig Latin".
There are things that are not easter-eggs or the slip-ups, but they are interesting enough to know/find.
BTW, there are usually much more slip-ups than easter-eggs, like in "The Matrix" movie
(it's not all of them, i saw one site with much more).
For example, the longest domain name offering free e-mail address(note like in Gmail only web-based access is for free)
that some e-mail programs won't accept because it's too long.
Actually, it's only one of a very (not) many longest domain names in the world.
There must be easter-eggs in Sony PSP itself and in games for it, it's undoubtfull,
it's only matter of time (and launch date). There was an easter-egg in Apple iPOD, why Sony PSP/Nintendo DS can't have one?
Also trying to find some easter-eggs sites, i found this real car easter-egg page.
On the same site by searching for "easter" there are some easter-eggs in DVD's.
There are some easter-eggs in one of first (if not the first one) video quest games --
Sierra's "Roberta Williams Phantasmagoria".
There are some ideas from jokes (easter-eggs?) even in TV commercials.
Like that new Car??be?g beer TV commercial that is clearly releated to idea of sidetalking anything from this site.
Just as manufacturer says (about new model): "It's not sidetalking anymore".
As some philosopher said: "The things that are sidetalking me, makes me stronger".
Large part of all easter-eggs are hidden in games.
For example, there are SO many easter-eggs (of different types) in Doom3. Though, some of them are kind of kinky:
On first level, there is a toilet not far from kitchen.
You meet guy at the toilet door, who is leaving it, so it was used recently (also look where he will go then).
There are three cabins, but magazines are laying on the floor of only one of them.
If you have flashlight (until you get any weapons, you don't. You could also use console cheat command "give weapons")
and you will look in the you will see that it have completely fitting contents.
I tried to jump and punch the lamp hanging from the ceiling (to light up the toilet cabin),
but it could be fixed only in some unappropriate positions.
There is no other source of light, so looks like darkness there is intentional.
Also there are some funny messages when you use menu in Doom3, like when you choose "Exit" -- "Running away?".
And if you choose "cancel" -- "Player decided to kill some more".
It's only a fraction of glory of Doom/Doom2 exit messages.
In that games there was something like "Shambler from another dimension awaits you at the DOS prompt".
And in later game -- Quake1, there was monster named Shambler.
There may be some pictures of developers or something like that in Doom3, like there was 3D model of John Carmack's head
in the beginning of one of Quake3 levels.
Also, in one of old 3D FPS games there were cheats in credits (i don't remember the title).
It's established practice to include massive numbers of easter-eggs in credits, like easily seen in "Naked gun",
old "Aeroplane" movies. Because credits is a thing which is one have rarely have guts to see completely.

Also you may read my old sorta FAQ on N-Gage (it was posted in forums of http://forum.nokiafree.org.
But now i can't log-in there, because i lost my psw and changed e-mail address (so i couldn't retrieve it).
So anyone with johnnysmith login is not me there.
Also don't ask me about N-Gage further, i haven't bought it (yet)).
(uploading of it is in progress)
Q: Do you have any Gmail accounts/invitations?!
A: No. I don't have any spare ones and any at all.
I'm on hotmail and waiting to get 250 MB for free there
(if MS will ever do it. Though very likely they are waiting for Google to offer 1GB publicly, not in beta version),
currently i'm satisfied by my mailbox size.
